This confidential and inclusive program is designed for up to eight individuals who are experiencing grief resulting from the loss of a beloved friend or family member. Some participants may be grieving a recent loss, while others may find that grief relating to a past death has suddenly been re-ignited by recent events. It provides a connection that transcends differences for those who are in mourning.
How the Group Works
This program encourages participation by grieving individuals regardless of where they are in their process. Through the group, people suffering from a loss learn to work through their grief with compassionate understanding and active listening. It is never intrusive. This is NOT a “therapy” group.
Up to eight participants will gather together in a safe and private space using the following guidelines for sharing.
- Respect the confidentiality of what is shared.
- Speak from your heart, not your head, about your
- Listen carefully, deeply and respectfully to what is shared.
- Speak out of the silence and leave a period of silence between speakers.
- Expect to speak only once, and be concise in what you share, until everyone has an opportunity to participate fully.
- Nobody is required to speak; it is fine to pass.
- Cross-talking while someone is sharing is discouraged.
Sometimes participants are asked to speak as they feel led to do so. Other times participants are encouraged to go around in a circle. Nobody is required to speak; it is fine to pass.
Each eight-week session can be repeated as often as participants choose throughout the year. Please call for more information regarding start dates for sessions.
(If you are a survivor of a death by suicide, please contact the Program Coordinator for guidance.)
This support group is co-facilitated by two volunteers who have been trained and serve as a hospice volunteer and an end-of-life doula. They have skill and experience in group facilitation ensuring a safe space for sharing. It is a confidential group of no more than eight participants; it is NOT a substitute for individual therapy.
Everyone is welcome on a first-come first-served basis. Participants are required to complete a PWC Registration Form. If the current program is full there is an opportunity to enroll in an upcoming eight-week program.
Coffee/Tea and goodies are served.
This program is free. A donation to the Peachland Wellness Centre is strongly encouraged.
